As you head west from Concord, Pleasant Hill, and Walnut Creek, you approach a beautiful town in the hills that is named after a French general, Lafayette, a hero of the American Revolution. Lafayette measures about 15 miles and is separated from Berkeley and Oakland by the Berkeley Hills. It has a BART station and connects to several major Bay Area hubs.

Lafayette's history can be traced back to the Sacian tribe of the Bay Miwok Indians. Numerous battles occurred between the Indians and Spaniards but the land went to the Mexicans. The city's first post office was established in 1957 and was named after Lafayette at said time.

The town isn't very large in population but has a high net worth. It approaches 25,000 individuals and each person makes close to $115,000 on average. The citizens are very patriotic. They placed crosses in the local hills representing each soldier who died in Iraq.

Lafayette also has some unique characteristics. It has the historical theater and library. Also, numerous small shops that line its streets.

The Mount Diablo Unified School District and Acalanes Union High School District are the main educational institutions in the city. The districts are generally well regarded and have good test scores. They student population is rich in diversity and represents the deep culture of Lafayette.

Lafayette hosts numerous fairs throughout the year and is close in proximity to the Walnut Creek Leshire Center for the Arts.
