In the heart of Contra Costa lies the jewel of the county, Walnut Creek, with a population of over 65,000 individuals. The city is neighbored by Orinda, Concord, and Alamo. Besides them, Walnut Creek has several cities near it including but not limited to Danville, San Ramon, and Lafayette. It serves a hub for Contra Costa as it has a major BART station that connects the community to major Bay Area cities like San Francisco and Oakland.
Walnut Creek rose from settlements by Bay Miwok Indians and followed with Mexican settlers. After the Mexican-American War, Americans took over the area with one of the first areas being right at the main hub of Walnut Creek, Mt. Diablo and N. Main Street. As the industrial revolution took hold, Walnut Creek exploded with the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad. The city is now a central location for businesses and families. Downtown Walnut Creek has become a key place to have a night on the town or get a gift for that special person.

Beyond the commercial area, Walnut Creek has several area school districts: Acalanes Union High School District, Walnut Creek School District, San Ramon Valley Unified School District, Mount Diablo Unified School District, and the Lafayette School District. While these districts vary in stature, they are each devoted to educating our next generation and melding the different cultures of the region.

One of the East Bay’s premier trails goes through Walnut Creek. The Iron Horse Regional Trail comes from Dublin and San Ramon, travels through Walnut Creek, and ends in Concord.

While it has a lively downtown, Walnut Creek hosts many events and activities during the year as it is home to the Lesher Performing Arts Center, several art galleries, movie theater, and a local library. Walnut Creek is considered the link between the East Bay and San Francisco.
